History

Plai, also known as galangal, is a centuries-old herbal remedy that has been used in traditional Thai and Southeast Asian medicine for a variety of ailments. Evidence of its use dates back to at least the 13th century, when it was mentioned in Thai medical texts, however it is most likely to have been known for centuries prior.

Plai is a member of the ginger family and has a pungent, slightly sweet flavor. It is used in a variety of dishes, but it is most commonly used as a medicinal herb.

Plai has a wide range of traditional herbal medicinal properties. It is known for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and analgesic (pain killing) effects as a balm or spray.
